Registration
Guidelines
Introduction
These
pages provide information concerning the requirements of the State
of Ohio for obtaining registration to practice architecture. At
the present time there are three paths leading to registration.
One of those paths is by examination, another by reciprocal registration
(i.e., those licensed in another jurisdiction), and the last is
through the reinstatement of a lapsed license.
Registration
laws were passed by the Ohio General Assembly in 1931 and became
effective on October 3rd of that year. There was an initial period
of one year after that date in which practicing architects could
apply for registration based upon their education and/or experience.
Since that time, registration has been based upon the satisfaction
of education, experience and examination requirements. These requirements
have continued to evolve based upon the growing requirements of
technical competence and the needs of the profession, generally
in concert with the National Council
of Architectural Registration Boards.
Firms
are also required to be licensed. Although firms are not authorized
to "practice" architecture, there are certain requirements
a firm must meet to be authorized to advertise architectural services
and to provide such services. Simply, the authorized firm is a
conduit through which the architect's professional services may
be provided. All questions concerning registration requirements
should be directed to the office of the Board.
